Google Layoffs

Google laid off more employees last week. It let go 3000 contract employees and 300 full time employees. Analysts expect more layoffs to come from Google in the future. The company also closed two regional offices in Michigan and Colorado. When the employees are terminated ruthlessly, executive managers take big money home even when they are terminated. Ebay’s senior executives received 4 years (years, not months) of pay when they were terminated. Well, I guess this is just the way it is. Related Links: Google Layoffs | Ebay Layoffs

Employees sue over time spent on booting the PCs

In U.S., some employees that are on hourly wage sued the companies on time spent on booting the PCs. They claim that they are not paid for the time taken for booting, logging in and logging out. We see all kinds of weird lawsuits. This is one of them. What about the time the contractors spent in the bathrooms, cafeteria and for smoking? Will they reimburse the company for that? What’s next? Will these companies sue the computer manufacturers? More on this story is here.

His #1 secret (IT guys frequently use jargon to confuse nontechnical business managers and hide the fact that they screwed up) is very true. People cover up all the time thinking that their business partners are morons. Some of them are. But, most of these guys are waking up and understanding the technology just to level up with techies. I can’t deny his secret #8 — You will go from goat to hero and back…

Layoffs are coming…

Many Indian companies started laying off people in a low-profile way. No press releases and no media reports. These companies silently let people go. This trend will continue at least for another 6 months until U.S. stabilizes itself both politically and economically. Hexaware eliminated 300 positions recently. TCS, IBM and similar companies let go many people citing poor performance. Companies can’t keep poor performers especially in poor economic environments. Situation in U.S. is deteriorating even more. Some companies convert full time positions to part-time positions. The number of people, whom the U.S. government classifies as working part time involuntarily swelled…

Layoffs in India

It’s generally unheard of in India. In a sign of market changes, Indian companies also started terminating poor performers. TCS terminated 500 staffs recently. IBM dismissed 700 freshers. It’s the side effect of hurried-up hiring processes employed throughout IT industry. I personally have the problem of recruiting good people. There are so many freshers out there, but it’s very hard to recruit the right person that has passion for the work.

8 Signs That Tell You To Quit

Richard Bayer, chief operating officer of The Five O’Clock Club, a national career-counseling network based in New York City has compiled a list of eight signals that usually mean your job is in jeopardy. “If you’ve noticed three or more of the warning signs, it’s time to update your resume and start job hunting,” he says. 1. You don’t fit in. Your values don’t match the company’s. If your colleagues are “dishonest and focused on getting ahead regardless of legal or moral barriers,” Bayer says, it’s time to quit. 2. Your boss doesn’t like you and you don’t like him…

Many freshers are so desperate to land a job that they do some weird things hoping that it would get the attention of the recruiters. Many candidates send “desktopdating” invitation to careers at digitalbhoomi dot com address. We are not in the business of dating candidates. When we received first few emails for desktopdating, it was funny. After few days, it was so irritating that we added a rule in outlook to throw out any email with desktopdating in the subject. Some candidates also try to impress us with the message “Hey Careers”¦ you are xxxxxxxx’s yaar!”. What is this…

When There Are More Than Two Interviewers…

You walk in to an interview room. You see there are four people sitting around the table to grill you. Everyone throws a question at you in sequence. You try to answer, but you don’t know whom to look at when you answer. In these kinds of situations, make everyone feel included and important. Break the room into three parts. Focus on one individual, make a point, shift your gaze to another part of the room, make a point, and do the same for the rest of the room. Also make sure that you maintain eye contact. It is associated…

Racial Discrimination in India

Forget the racial discrimination in western countries, it’s happening right here in India. If you belong to a particular caste, you will be given preferential treatment in some companies! I work in Infosys. I don’t see much of discrimination here. My friend works in CTS (Cognizant Technology Solutions). I was surprised by the way he described the working environment in CTS. According to him, CTS favours only Tamil Brahmins in hiring and promotion. The culture is tilted towards promoting people from Brahmin community. Apparently, there is a lot of politics going on inside CTS. Many Brahmins in Chennai mention “Only…
