MyYearBook CEO’s memo to employees after merger with Quepasa

You know facebook. Do you know MyYearBook? It’s a popular networking site for teenagers in U.S. Recently Quepasa, social networking site for Latinos, bought MyYearBook for $100 million. The merger news itself is a non-event. However, the way the CEO communicated the merger news to the employees was unique. MyYearBook CEO Geoff Cook started the memo with clear message: Your job remains safe. Our intention with this merger is to continue to grow, and grow faster, not to make cuts. Your job is as secure as it was a month ago, a year ago, or in the case of many…

Facebook campaign in Israel helped to reduce the price of cheese

Egyptians used facebook and twitter to oust their president. Israelis used facebook page to achieve something unthinkable – they made Tnuva Food Industries, the Israeli dairy company that controls 70% of the cottage cheese market in Israel, to reduce the price of cottage cheese. The Facebook page was launched by Yitzhak Elrov. He asked people to boycott cottage cheese until the prices come down. Satyagraha at work in Israel! In a matter of days, 70,000 people joined the facebook page and the page was growing by 2,000 people per hour. Sales of cottage cheese dropped between 20% and 25% during…

FDI in India doubled

Foreign direct investments (FDI) in India more than doubled from $2.21 billion in May 2010 to $4.66 billion in May 2011. There was a dramatic increase of 77% in FDI from April to May this year. More details are here. Sure, it’s a good sign for Indian economy. Unfortunately, this is also sign that real estate prices in India are not going to come down any time soon. FDIs and local real estate brokers hiked the real estate prices in the last 10 years. It appears that the trend is going to continue for the foreseeable future.

Google +

Google had an amazing social networking platform – Orkut. It was popular in India and Brazil. However, Google didn’t properly leverage it to compete in social media battleground. I am not sure about Brazil, but Indians ditched Orkut and massively migrated to facebook in the last two years. Google woke up and trying to compete with Facebook with a new product called Google+. The new product is trying to exploit some major weaknesses of Facebook. Privacy features in Facebook is kind of joke. If you set your profile and adjust privacy settings to have your pictures visible only to your…

File download failure in Internet Explorer

IE is weird. Still, many people prefer to use IE. Recently I had an issue with csv file download. I have a program that downloads a set of data from the database in the form of csv file. If you click the download button, you will be prompted to open/save the csv file. All is well in firefox, safari and chrome. When I test this in IE, it bombs and throws error message “Internet explorer can’t contact the site….” The page I was testing was on the https site. It also use session variables. For some reasons IE goes haywire…

Infosys in hot water

It was going to happen anyway. Now, it happened. Someone filed lawsuit against Infosys for abusing B1 visa program. Many Indian companies were doing this for years. These companies get B1 visa for their employees and send them for long term assignments in U.S. The visa type B1 is meant for “business trips”. Business trips are supposed to be short-term trips. The employee is supposed to attend some meetings/trade shows/conferences and return back to home country in weeks. Instead, B1 visa holders stay in U.S. for months. It’s not only Infosys, other outsourcing companies also follow the same practice. It…

Yahoo-Mail Vs Gmail

For many years, I have been a big fan of Yahoo email. User interface of Yahoo email was used to be simple. If you are familiar with Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, navigating Yahoo email was a piece of cake. Over years, Yahoo email becomes more and more unreliable. Frequently, it fails to load the pages. Email messages die while being sent out to the universe. If you use Yahoo email with firefox 3.x, you would have noticed even more crashes in Yahoo email. On the other hand, Gmail is lot more reliable compared to Yahoo email. The feature I…

Facebook is sued for $1 by AOL news writer

David Fagin was banned by facebook for “spamming” by sending number of friend requests. Ironically, facebook recommended those contacts to be added. I am sure you would have seen lots of small blocks hanging around in the right column with the recommendation of more friends. When David Fagin clicked on those links and tried to send the friend request, he got the warning. Boy, was he pissed off or what?! Now, he is suing facebook for $1! Ok, $1 is not much, but it will definitely get the attention of lot of people including Mark Zuckerberg. Related Links: Tech Crunch…

iPhone secretly tracks where you go

Do you remember where you were last year this time? Your iPhone knows. Security researchers Pete Warden and Alasdair Allan discovered that iPhone and iPad stores users’ locations and timestamps in an unencrypted file. When you sync your iPhone or iPad with your computer, the information is also stored in your computers. If someone gets access to your computers, they can easily track all the places you visited in the last one year. It’s a serious issue for people that worry about privacy. Most of us don’t think that someone is going to look at our computers and look for…

Anna Hazare breaks fast and unites India

Anna Hazare has shown us what one man can do. Our government finally agreed to all his demands. I feel jubilant that a group of activists forced the government to pass the bill that was pending for 42 years. What happened in the past four days is nothing short of amazing. People, especially youth, from all parts of the country jumped in to support Mr. Anna Hazare. What motivated the young generation to participate in a campaign led by 72 year old man? Our current young generation is truly motivated by Mr. Abdul Kalam. When I read discussions in our…
