Summer has set in late this year in Chennai...But the temperature keeps rising everyday. Another two to three months Chennaites will have to put a brave front to the sweltering heat. Here are a few tips to stay healthy and beat the summer...Though we all may be knowing these, I am just sharing them as a reminder...

Stay indoors if you do not have any urgent work during daytime.

Drink one or two glasses of water just before you leave the house. Be sure to take a bottle of water with you and wear your cap/hat or take an umbrella. Avoid being out in the sun between 10 AM to 4 PM.

Do not drink aerated/soft drinks to quench your thirst. Instead go for coconut water or fresh juices like orange (Mosambi) or water melon juices. Don't add ice cubes but drink it plain to get the maximum benefit out of them.

Take plenty of green vegetables like cucumber, lauki(bottle-gourd), spinach, lady's finger and the like.

Drink buttermilk and avoid too much of coffee and tea.

If rice is left over after dinner, pour some water in it. On the next day, take this water, add a little buttermilk and a pinch of salt and drink it. There is nothing like it to keep your body cool and filling.

Make raithas with curd or lassis to add taste to your buds while keeping your body cool.

Fill your fridge with fruits like water melon, musk melon, cucumbers and lemons and make the best use of them with your family.

Mint leaves or pudina is a wonder leaf to keep you cool. Make tasty chutneys, rice pulav or use them in dips.

Onions have cooling property. Make the best use of them by adding them to your salads, raithas or in your curry and gravy. Take an onion with you when you go out as its inhalation prevents you from sunstroke.

Lime juice is another favorite drink in summer as it helps you lessen the heat inside and outside your body.

Avoid eating too much of spicy food as it irritates your stomach and may cause burning sensation.

Keep your skin/face clean by washing them and using water based moisturizers.

Keep drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated.
